Academic writing is one of the hardest and time consuming subjects which ESL students struggle in a higher education. As a lecturer in Japan for more than five years now, I found my rubrics useful during process writing. The rubrics are used at the beginning, and in between each revision and after finishing the final draft. They are used by students themselves, by peers, and by the instructor. Repeated usage and feedback from multiple perspectives support understanding of how to improve the essays.
Please take a look at the rubrics we use in our university academic writing courses. The categories and the score ratio are based on Lee and VanPatten (2003) and they are modified for each class. modification is based on the common mistakes and points of importance for each topic. They have Japanese translation together with English description to help the students understand well as a concept. Enjoy writing!
